Gay Twitter Roundup: 'Snow White' Backlash, Bisexuality & 'The White Lotus' Brothers Hooking Up
Andrea Marks Joseph READ TIME: 4 MIN.
When the world is at its most chaotic, we should find our way to places where we can escape the noise and the stress, going out to do our civic duty of touching grass once in a while. It sounds like a smart and wise plan, but we simply wouldn't know because we prefer to touch our phone screens in a swiping motion and look up hours later realizing the sun has set but also that we have seen hotter men than we would have if we went wherever the metaphorical grass is.
In that time, we learned about a new Hollywood exec we as a society can collectively hate, contemplated the social and political impact of streamer Hasan Piker now having a sprinkle of grey chest hair, and marveled at the magic of a drag queen performing on a hoverboard. There's nothing like Gay Twitter, and there's nowhere we'd rather be!
This week, we had fun with cryptic phrasing like "half fruitcake" from the K-pop star who came out in fruity code, and asked "why didn't he fly out to..." as we laughed at out-of-touch producer Marc Platt whose attempted takedown of "Snow White" star Rachel Zegler was wildly unsuccessful. We once again came together to react to shocking "The White Lotus" happenings, and made sure to honor the importance of celebrity underwear campaigns. So much to undress and unpack! Let's get right into it!
Everything is gay television, and gay television is everything
We're currently enjoying the bliss that is a season of life filled with gay TV to talk about: The men of "9-1-1" may finally realize they've been in love with each other, bringing to undeniable life the ship that's taking over the world before it even really happens. "The White Lotus" is top of mind, for some of us because the brothers hooked up and are spiralling about it; for others, because their chosen baby name has perfect timing to really connect with the show on a deeper level.
"Severance" ended and we're still thinking about Milchick performing, and of course the goats; The family at the heart of campy megachurch satire "The Righteous Gemstones" are "like K-pop idols" to one person (kinda relatable, actually) and sapphic survivalist show "Yellowjackets" is getting more unhinged as it goes, which makes it even more fun to dissect its queer and cannibal themes.
Celebrity underwear campaigns are so important
New, hot photos dropped of Jacob Elordi, "The Parenting" star Brandon Flynn, and "It boy of Asia" Yehao, and we loved (and immediately saved to camera roll) them all; A photo of Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz taking off his top has been requested as the next Calvin Klein underwear billboard, and we completely agree; Talking about underwear campaigns, someone got very drunk and very creative with "Red, White & Royal Blue" star Taylor Zakhar Perez's Lacoste photoshoot; and the salt-and-pepper happening in streamer Hasan Piker's chest hair has our brains short-circuiting.
Did you guys know this about the knob? Wow. Vaguely (likely unintentionally) horny marketing for mundane objects is a reminder, as the person who shared this commented, that "there is still so much beauty in the world."
The backlash to the "Snow White" backlash is the tea
We're not getting into the "Snow White" backlash here today, but we are getting into the fierce, hilarious backlash that happened in response to said backlash. Can you imagine ordering a reputational hit piece on a young actor in a powerful industry publication and instead being hit with an avalanche of memes about your various children's' silly life choices that you supported, the entire world enthusiastically uninterested in your claims and only wondering if you could instead undo half of your life's work because it's been ridiculous? The tea has been hot, and it's been joyously shared! Most urgently, this moment reminded us that we cannot rest until we know the truth about what happened between Molly Gordon and Ben Platt right before his wedding!!
Being "half fruitcake" often means fumbling a hot girl
There's been a lot of fun conversation about bisexuality happening on Gay Twitter this week. The K-pop singer who came out as bisexual on social media with the coded phrase "half fruitcake;" and the devastation of "Shameless" character Fiona Gallager "fumbling" Gemma from "Severance;" and we've found someone who may actually be "too woke" to find their place in the bi dating scene.
Queer people are pop culture's past, present and future
We will always make time to honor our iconic pop culture elders (not necessarily always 'elder' in age, but in impact) who created lasting moments that have shaped who we are today. The person who yassified a stranger to maintain anonymity, the person who asked Biden how many genders there are –and the White House staffer or gen z family member who briefed him aggressively enough on the topic that he gave this impeccable, exasperated answer! We also must keep up with the queer icons who are making their mark one modern, memeable step at a time right now: The drag queen performing on a hoverboard; the chic Old Hollywood energy of Pedro Pascal's whole vibe; this unfathomably nonchalant guy who "just [does] stuff for Coach" and keeps hitting a fabulous pose. What a time to be alive and gay!
Before we go...
We present to you some things that we'll be thinking about for... probably the rest of our lives, but certainly at the least for the rest of the year! Who is the man who has thought –all this time! – that "Emilia Pérez" is "Emily in Paris" in Spanish? He thought the huge Hollywood scandal was about a Spanish edition of "Emily in Paris?" Thinking back on all the times we watched the Netflix show and thought "That's insane. And yet... It's actually soooo Emily. We'll allow it!" this outrageous concept kind of makes sense? But what else does he think is going on in the world?
Why was Troye Sivan photographed wearing no pants next to thee late, not-at-all-great but legendary Logan Roy and which museum will this photo be exhibited in? We're also still thinking about the person who replied to the most horrifying babysitting news item saying "that child must feel so vindicated." Because they're right, just like the child was. Again, what a time to be alive!
