Streaming Queer: October 2024

October's streaming offering is thrilling, twisted fun! "Killer Heat" is a Greek island-set murder mystery starring a tense, frequently-shirtless Richard Madden; "House of Spoils" sees Ariana DeBose open her own farm-to-table restaurant only for everything to decay in front of her as she's serving it. In "Time Cut," queer actor Madison Bailey time-travels to save her sister in 2003, and an eerie 1930s-set psychological thriller follows a disturbed Sarah Paulson frantically trying to protect her children from the region's deadly dust storms and the myths surrounding it.

We reunite with the cast of cozy queer teen show "Heartstopper," wholesome supernatural ensemble comedy "Ghosts," and the non-stop energy of LA-set law drama "The Lincoln Lawyer." Sapphic reality dating series "I Kissed a Girl" brings hot lesbian drama to our screens, and the David Tennant-starring show "Rivals" brings us horny, obnoxious rich people creating their own drama.

This month, we also say goodbye to queer lightning-in-a-bottle shows "Somebody Somewhere" and "What We Do in the Shadows." It's the perfect Halloween mix of heartwarming and horrifying. Happy Streaming!

"Killer Heat"

"For some people, jealousy is a lot like love." The fast-paced, compelling movie trailer opens with the breathtaking drama of someone falling to their death from a cliff they were climbing, alone and silent. What follows is a twisty plot set on the Greek island of Crete, filled with wealthy people keeping secrets from each other, and perhaps from themselves.

Penelope Vardakis (Shailene Woodley) hires a private investigator to look into her brother-in-law's death, disclosing that it wasn't an accident, that she can't trust the local police because her husband's family "owns them," and later, confessing that her affair with the dead man was "complicated, but it was love." A tense, threatening, frequently shirtless and otherwise finely suited Richard Madden plays Penelope's husband, Elias. Born into a life of power and privilege, but losing his brother suddenly and suspiciously, Elias finds himself walking a tightrope to manage family business dealings. Now it seems he must find a way to manage his wife's suspicion, too.

"My Old Ass"

This charming and nostalgic coming-of-age comedy is a story about love, loss, family, and all that we are forced to confront while growing up. While tripping on shrooms, free-spirited, out-as-queer teenager Elliott (Maisy Stella) finds herself face-to-face with her 39-year-old self (out actor Aubrey Plaza). Through the magic of cinema, their time together continues after the night of her shrooms trip, the two selves getting to know each other and discussing their shared life from two polar-opposite perspectives. When Elliott's "old ass" (Plaza) delivers warnings to her younger self – appreciate your mom more; avoid all boys named Chad – Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about her family, her life, and her idea of love.

"I Kissed a Girl" Season 1

Dannii Minogue returns as Cupid for the sapphic spin-off of queer reality dating show "I Kissed a Boy." This is the first British dating show to exclusively feature lesbian and bisexual women. As with the previous series, 10 single people are matched up ahead of meeting each other, and as soon as they meet, must first kiss. "No small talk. No swiping on the apps. Just one kiss that could be the start of many." Then they all live in an Italian country house together, where each episode will "serve drama, smash stereotypes, and promise more twists and turns than ever before." "The Boulet Brothers' Dragula" Season 6

"The Boulet Brothers' Dragula" is a horror-drag show and reality competition where drag artists from around the world compete in challenges that test their skills in costume design and creation, makeup and special effects, and where they are judged on everything from live performance to craftsmanship. They're competing for the Dragula crown, a grand prize of $100k, and a headlining spot on a world tour. Dubbed 'Season 666,' this 10-episode season is "bigger, bloodier and more brutal than anything that's come before, featuring expanded 'on location' challenges, twisted new themes for the floorshows, cinematic sequences dripping with dread, and innovative drag that will leave viewers gasping." Judges this season include Jennifer Tilly ("Bride of Chucky," "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,") Mike Flanagan ("Midnight Mass," "Haunting of Hill House"), Jamie Clayton ("Hellraiser"), Tatiana Maslany ("Orphan Black," "She-Hulk"), Don Mancini (creator and writer of "Chucky") and Justin Simien ("The Haunted Mansion," "Dear White People"), and "RuPaul's Drag Race" stars Violet Chachki and Alaska Thunderfuck.

"The Boulet Brothers' Dragula" Season 6 premieres October 1 on Shudder and AMC+.

"House of Spoils"

Queer actor and singer Ariana DeBose leads this deliciously twisted Blumhouse supernatural horror film set in the culinary world. "House of Spoils" follows an ambitious chef (DeBose) who makes the bold choice to open her first restaurant – a farm-to-table affair on a remote estate. She must keep her confidence and cool amidst kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, and crushing self doubt as things begin to feel... slightly off, as the powerful spirit of the estate's previous owner threatens to sabotage her at every turn. "House of Spoils" is a psychological and sensuous thriller that will leave your heart pounding and mouth watering. Barbie Ferreira ("Euphoria") and Arian Moayed ("Succession") have supporting roles in the film, as a chef and investor, respectively.

"Heartstopper" Season 3

"While Heartstopper will always celebrate the joyful and point towards hope," series creator and writer Alice Oseman told Netflix Tudum, "I'm really excited that we are allowing the tone of the show to mature alongside our beloved characters growing up. Mental health, sex, university ambitions, and more." Oseman shared that as Nick (out actor Kit Connor), Charlie (out actor Joe Locke) and their friends get older, they're "learning more about themselves and each other, and experiencing new desires, new fears, and new joys as they approach adulthood." Season 3 begins with Charlie eager to tell Nick that he loves him and Nick holding on to something important he needs to say to Charlie. Ben (Sebastian Croft) won't be returning in Season 3, and gorgeous out actor Jonathan Bailey will cameo as Jack Maddox, an Instagram-famous classicist and Charlie's celebrity crush.

"Heartstopper" Season 3 premieres October 3 on Netflix.

"Hold Your Breath"

Out actor Sarah Paulson leads this psychological thriller movie as Margaret, a woman who is convinced that a "sinister presence" is threatening her family. She fights desperately to protect them from this mythologized entity that can seemingly "seep through the cracks" of her home and get inside her children, making them "do terrible things." Set in 1930s Oklahoma, during the region's horrific, deadly dust storms, this eerie, suspenseful film feels like it's gonna haunt you for long after the movie ends. Annaleigh Ashford and "The Bear" actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach are also in the film.
