Night Of The Comet
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
It's the end of the world as we know it, and it's being saved by 2 Valley Girls. Yes, I'm talking about that cult classic "Night of the Comet" from 1984 and its Blu-ray debut is here. Shout Factory delivers the goods to the masses again with this zombie/thriller/comedy.
When a comet comes to Earth one night, it's cause for celebration for the residents of Los Angeles, including blonde bimbo Sam (Kelli Maroney) and tough as nails Reggie (Catherine Mary Stewart). They both hate their stepmother and live their lives as carefree as possible. They awaken the next morning to total silence and Reggie is anxious but Sam blows it all off.
Discovering the comet wiped out most of the people on the planet, they hole up at the local radio station and run into Hector (Robert Beltran), who may or may not be on their side. There are also zombies on the loose, and a group of government officials are listening to their every move via the radio station.
"Night of the Comet" is really a spoof of apocalyptic films, ripe with witty dialogue and low-budget set pieces. The eerie and murky orange sky of Los Angeles sets the tone of the film well, showcased nicely on the Blu-ray transfer.
The movie works well on so many different levels, especially as a comedy. The infamous mall shopping scene is a prime example, where the girls discover they have the world at their fingertips and decide shopping is a great way to celebrate.
Features on the Blu-ray include interviews with the 3 main stars, a photo gallery, and theatrical trailer.
