Grimm - Season One

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.

The surprise hit of last year, "Grimm: Season One" is available on Blu-ray in an astonishing hi-def transfer, one of the best this horror/sci-fi fan has ever seen. These 22 episodes zip along at a breathtaking pace and will hook you in from the pilot episode.

Hunky David Giuntoli plays the title character, a descendant in a family of Grimms, or someone who has the ability to see creatures from the ancient world in current times. If you can suspend your belief in the notion that the Grimm fairytales were actually true stories, "Grimm" will highly entertain you. With the producers of "Angel" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" behind it, it's no wonder the show is a smash.

"Grimm" features elements of horror, fantasy, detective show, and even humor...most notably from Silas Weir Mitchell, who plays a modern version of the Big Bad Wolf. As incredible as the pilot show is (and most of the subsequent shows), there are many clunkers that follow it. This is inevitable for a new show with a surprising number of episodes, spread out over 5 Blu-ray discs.

As many special features as there are (8 in total), more than half are lame and unnecessary. A gag reel is too short and the behind-the-scenes feature doesn't go into enough detail. Audition tapes of the actors are intriguing and the Grimm Guide taps into the fairytales and what they mean. Grimm trading cards are included as well and are perfect for the geek card collector.
