Burn Notice - Season Three

SNL may have asked, "What is Burn Notice?", but die-hard followers of the show have known for three seasons exactly what the show is: action, comedy, ironic writing, and just the right touch of tongue-in-cheek camp. Any specific questions about the show's premise are on display every week during the title sequence (he used to be a spy, then got "burned"--spy-speak for fired--and dumped in Miami).

Season three literally starts up exactly where season two left off: super-spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) jumping from a helicopter into the ocean. Episode 301, "Friends and Family," starts with Michael reaching shore, only to be chased by cops until he surrenders. From there, the entire season of Michael dealing with police, bad guys, clients, old friends, old enemies, his brother, and his nicotine-addicted mother are all set into motion by creator Matt Nix and his crafty writing staff. Is there a smarter show on TV? Probably. But there may not be a cleverer one.

Highlights from season three include the return of Larry (Tim Matheson), Brennan (Jay Karnes from The Shield), Michael getting caught in the wilderness, Michael and crew faking their own deaths, and episode 304, "Fearless Leader," in which Michael, Fi (Gabrielle Anwar), and Sam (Bruce Campbell) pretend to be low-level thugs in order to convince an aspiring badguy (Nic Turturro) to strike out on his own and betray his current boss.
